This goes against so much of what we are taught, what we cling to for security and stability. No wonder the writer of Hebrews calls the Gospel a stumbling block and folly. I see the wilderness temptations as an invitation for Jesus to join the empire - be Caesar. Eventually Jesus would offer a different empire or kingdom or reign - a beloved community.
I need to discover the clear difference between the empires! Help!
